Ethernet network splitters for passive extraction of network data


Fiber Taps are passive coupling elements for safe and reliable network access of network data in optical networks. These TAPS are looped into the fibre optic line and mirror the entire network traffic without introducing a point of failure. These optical TAPS do not require electricity; they are purely passive components and, therefore, untraceable and only detectable by using expensive test equipment. Hackers and other attackers stand no chance and, as a result, the integrity of the diverted data remains unaltered. This is why Network TAPS is increasingly being used in the field of network forensics. How exactly does it work?

Technically, optical TAPS split the light at its arrival and divides it into two fibres. In this case, a large part of the coupled signal remains on the actual network route and the remainder goes to output on a monitoring port for external recording. Highly sensitive prisms are used to split the fibre optic light. As optical fibre TAPS work independent of protocol, the devices can be installed in different network media. TAPS for multimode and single mode network types are available, and the network wavelength and the speed are irrelevant.

The data is being copied transparently and lossless without disturbing the active line. This coupling technology with the prism means that losses naturally arise and need to be considered in the selection of TAPS. Fibre TAPS, for example, are available in 5 different variations and have differing extraction ratios. Devices are available with the "Split-Ratio" 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, 90:10. A typical attenuation value of a 70:30 fibre TAPS located on the network side is about 2 dB and 6 dB on the monitoring ports. Single-mode Passive Fiber Network TAPs

Garland Technology, the leading manufacturer of passive network tap solutions, offers the ultimate space-saving product that accommodates 28 optical fiber taps in a 1U package. This product is also available as a combined solution with 56 taps in a 1U chassis. The first 28 taps are installed at the front and the others at the back. Singlemode or multimode, as well as taps for higher speeds of 40GBit / s or 100GBit / s can be combined in one device and shared with other taps. Fiber Taps from Garland Technology give you 100% visibility of full-duplex traffic and support network types such as 100Mbps, 1Gigabit, 10Gigabit, 40Gigabit, 100Gigabit, OC3, OC12, OC48, and OC192. The fiber taps are passive components that do not require power and are not visible to network hackers. In contrast to a SPAN port you get with a Tap all Layer 1 & 2 information and also the so important for the network analysis CRC errors discharged.

Passive Replication TAPs are used to copy 100% full duplex traffic; the replicated traffic can then be sent to multiple monitoring appliances to analyze your network. Replications TAPs come with a fixed configuration, taking one full duplex input and delivering three copies of the network traffic.
